About Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra

Sitar, Harmonium, Bhajan, Kirtan & Singing Lessons — Dharamshala

Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra has performed all over India with his grandfather Thumri Samrat Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra.

A distinguished virtuoso of the sitar and "A Grade" artist of All India Radio, Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra represents the pinnacle of the storied musical heritage of Varanasi. His artistic journey began in early childhood, born into a lineage of formidable masters. He was first initiated into the intricacies of the sitar by his grandfather, the legendary "Thumri Samrat" Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra and later by Thakur Rajbhan Singh Ji of Benares Hindu University.

Panditji’s artistry is defined by his mastery of the Gayaki Ang—a sophisticated technique that translates the nuances of the human voice onto the strings of the sitar. This specialized training was imparted to him by his father, Pandit Amarnath Mishra, and his uncle, Pandit Pashupatinath Mishra, the duo celebrated throughout India as the illustrious "Mishra Bandhu."

A decorated performer, Pandit Mishra’s career is marked by early brilliance and sustained excellence. After securing first prize at the Sangeet Natak Academy in 1981, he was later conferred the prestigious title of "Sur Mani" following his acclaimed performance at the Kal Ke Kalakar festival in 1988. This accolade served as a prelude to his debut at the historic Haridas Sangeet Samaroh.

On the national stage, Pandit Mishra is a veteran of All India Radio, where he holds the distinguished "A-Grade" classification and has frequently been featured in the National Program of Music. As a global cultural ambassador for the Government of India and the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), his music has resonated in the great concert halls of the world—from the La Bâtie-Festival de Genève to high-profile tours across Taiwan, Mauritius, and South Africa. Whether performing at the serene Ganga Mahotsav or on international stages, Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra continues to evoke the spiritual and technical depth of the Benaras tradition, bridging the ancient and the contemporary through his strings.

In a career spanning over 50 years, Panditji has had the privilege of accompanying some of the most renowned and beloved Hindustani Music and Dance maestros of India like Pandit Birju Maharaj, Sitara Devi, Pandit Gopi Kishan and many others. Today, Panditji teaches Sitar, Harmonium, Bhajan, Kirtan and Singing in Dharamshala — in Bhagsu, Dharamkot and McLeodganj.

What Students Say

Our students’ feedback inspires us! Here are some of the experiences shared by our learners.
KS - USA

Learning sitar under Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra for the last five years from the USA has been a deeply transformative experience. His mastery of the Benares Gharana and the "Gayaki Ang" brings the soulful nuances of the human voice to the strings with incredible precision.

Most of my classes happen online, 3 times a week. I visit Panditji in the summer in Bhagsu/Dharamshala every year or two for the immersives.

Despite the distance, his 1:1 online lessons provide a seamless and authentic connection to the heart of Varanasi because the basics are already established in the in-person immersions. Panditji is an exceptional mentor who balances immense patience with the rigorous standards of a true virtuoso.

Mirjam - Spain

I came to Bhagsu from Spain for a yoga retreat, not expecting music to become such an important part of my journey. One evening at Trimurti Garden, I heard Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra perform, and something in me became very still. A few days later, I found myself sitting in front of him as a student.

Panditji teaches with deep patience and warmth. Even as a complete beginner, I felt welcomed into a tradition that is both ancient and alive. What I learned with him continues to resonate far beyond those days in Dharamshala — in my practice, my listening, and my everyday life.

If you have the chance to hear him or study with him, even briefly, it is a truly special experience.

Simon - Germany

I first met Pandit Batuk Nath Mishra in Bhagsu with no real understanding of Indian classical music, only curiosity. What began as a few tentative lessons became years of study under his guidance. Panditji has a rare gift — he doesn't just teach music, he opens a doorway into a living tradition, making even the most intricate ragas feel approachable without losing their depth. Learning from him has shaped not only my music, but the way I listen, practice, and experience sound itself. Whether you come for a few days or stay much longer, time with him is something that stays with you.

SJ Karol - USA

Since June 2024, I have had the privilege of studying the soulful and expressive Thumri singing style under Panditji’s guidance. I took a month long immersive in Bhagsu and since then, have been taking 3-4 lessons a week. This has allowed me to truly immerse myself in the traditional guru-shishya relationship, which is essential for grasping the subtle emotional inflections and melodic nuances that define the Benares tradition.

Panditji is a rare teacher: he is immensely patient, yet his standards are rigorous. His 1:1, real-time coaching has been the cornerstone of my progress, bridging the gap between technical ability and genuine artistry. His mastery of the Gayaki Ang brings the music to life in a way that is both deeply traditional and personally resonant.
